Friday August 21 2009 at the Barracks in Sion:
Vehicle inspection for the Grand Raid

A vehicle inspection will be held between 11 am and 8 pm on Friday, August 21, at the race office in Sion.

--> Liste des Check Points 2009

The inspection is obligatory. Participants who have performed a pre-check with one of the organization’s partners may undergo a rapid, simplified inspection. Nevertheless, the organization reserves the right to refuse registration by a participant whose bicycle fails to pass the vehicle inspection.

This is for your safety... and that of the other competitors

This inspection is obligatory for bicycles participating in the Great Raid.

The inspectors of your bicycle are professionals and they have one objective: YOUR SAFETY

Since introduction of vehicle inspection the number of accidents due to mechanical problems has sharply decreased.

On the day of the race technical staff members will be stationed all along the course and will be at your service for any needed mechanical repairs to your bike.

Advice from the specialist

Bring a VTT to the Grand Raid which you have already ridden. It is inadvisable to inaugurate a new bicycle for the occasion...

15 days before the race visit your bicycle mechanic for a check-up of the following points:

--> Gears (operation and wear on transmission)
--> Brakes (cables or hydraulic system)
--> Rubbers and brake pads (wear)
--> Axis of the pedals (there may be no play)
--> Direction (must turn freely and without play)
--> Handlebar/bracket (the unit must be quite tight)
--> Saddle / saddle stem (tighten)
--> Wheels (fixing, tension of the rays and net curtain)
--> Rims (wear on the side walls)
--> Tires (wear and tires adapted to conditions)
--> Fork and suspension (correct operation and pressure)
--> Screws and bolts (check for tightening)
--> Shoes/pedals (interlocking and release of the clips)
--> Pedals (play on the axis)
--> Helmet (good fit and well adjusted straps)

At the time of your last exit before the Grand Raid examine your brake pads and do not hesitate to change them if necessary!

Experience tells us that 50% brakes (in dry weather...) will not make it to Grimentz.

Some figures...

The vehicle inspection involves:

--> 40 volunteer inspectors
--> 80 volunteer experts on the day of the race
--> 12 technical stations distributed all along the course
--> 1300 tire tubes
--> 250 normal tires
--> 100 tubeless tires
--> 60 chain sprays
--> 300 CO2 bottles
--> 2327 Shimano parts
--> 12 vehicles
--> 17 years of experience
